It was highlighted today at a press conference at the headquarters of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina where the agency and its Director Zoran Galić and Head of the Strategic Planning and EU Integration Office Almir Bašić presented the Work Report for 2017.

The BiH Border Police recorded an increase in efficiency in all segments of activities, in addition to evident personnel shortage (564 police officers lacking in service) and insufficient material and technical equipment or infrastructure deficiencies, as evidenced by numerous indicators, starting with the verification of a large number of persons through the available databases and cases of detection of persons in an attempt to illegally cross the border, and an increase in the official reports for committed crimes.

Responding to the inquiries by journalistic regarding the migration crisis, the director of the BP of BiH Zoran Galić said that BiH has had an increase in the number of illegal migrants in recent years, which has been particularly visible since the beginning of 2018.

He added that these are the challenges that need to be tackled in an adequate manner, reminding that the most of the illegal entries were recorded in the southeast and northeast of BiH, respectively in the areas of Trebinje and Zvornik. When it comes to migrants departing BiH, the largest number of illegal migrants was registered in the Una-Sana Canton region.

Galić once again warned that there is a problem with shortage of police officers, that is, personnel shortage within the BP BiH, as well as insufficient material and technical equipment and generally inadequate infrastructure at border crossings, which is especially pronounced in the field offices in Gradiška, the West and the South.

According to the Report of the BP of BiH for 2017 and the presented indicators, the BP of BiH has significantly improved its cooperation with police agencies and other competent authorities in BiH, as well as INTERPOL and EUROPOL.

According to the indicators at the agency’s disposal, 105 illegal migrants were detained in October 2017, in November there were 76, while 205 persons were detained in December 2017, and most of them came from Pakistan (124), Algeria (125), Afghanistan (85) Turkey (64), Libya (56), Syria (62), Morocco (43), Iran (26), Albania (18), and 96 from Kosovo.

In accordance with the signed international readmission-admission agreements, 293 foreigners were admitted to BiH, which is 146.22 percent more than in 2016. Most of them were citizens of Turkey (150), Albanian nationals (77) and persons from Kosovo (45).

The BP of BiH also implemented several successful operations aimed against smuggling of persons, and it has successfully took part in the operations codenamed "Bosporus" and "Kabatas", as named by the police agencies of other countries. SELEC awarded the BP of BiH with the second prize for a successful fight against cross-border crime, which made this BiH police agency highly recognized as very successful among numerous agencies in the region of Southeast Europe.

In 2017 the BP of BiH implemented 153 operational activities (112 at local, 21 at regional and 20 at central level) and participated in six operations organized by FRONTEX and DCAF.
