MOSTAR, Feb 26 (FENA) - From January 1 to February 25, 2018, members of the Border Police of BiH (BPBiH) caught 450 migrants from high risk migration countries in an attempt or immediately after the illegal crossing of the state border, which is a significant increase compared to the same period in 2017.
In addition, 410 people were prevented from entering BiH in a way that they gave up on illegal crossing the border due to the engagement of police officers at the border line with Montenegro and Serbia, says the statement issued on Monday by the Border Police of BiH.
The largest number of illegal migrants were found on Monday in the areas of Trebinje, Gacko, Visegrad, Zvornik, Bratunac, Velika Kladusa, Bijeljina, Bihac and smaller numbers in the areas of Brcko, Foca, Posusje, Capljina and Gruda.
Due to the increased number of illegal migrants discovered in the region of the eastern Herzegovina, Zvornik, Bratunac, Visegrad and Velika Kladusa, additional police officers were engaged and specialist equipment redeployed from other units of the BP BiH to the Trebinje, Zvornik, Visegrad and Velika Kladusa border police units.
- Besides the measure of preventing illegal migrants from crossing the border, members of the GPBiH continuously carry out patrols, surveillance and observation, collect intelligence-security data, set ambushes and checkpoints and conduct mixed patrols along BiH's common border with neighboring countries – said Director of BP of BiH Zoran Galic, adding that this police agency, along with other bodies dealing with illegal migration, was able to respond to the increased migration pressure and a growing trend of attempts and illegal entry into BiH of migrants from high risk migration countries.
Also, due to the registered cases of use of the cargo space of motor vehicles for smuggling migrants, BP BiH is implementing a measure of increased control and mandatory inspection of all cargo vehicles that enter BiH from Serbia and Montenegro.
The caught Illegal migrants come from the following countries: Syria 123, Libya 65, Afghanistan 51, Pakistan 45, Palestine 39, Morocco 22, Algeria 21, Iraq 17, Turkey 14, Iran 12, five from Tunisia and Cuba, each, three from India and Albania, respectively, two from Bangladesh and Egypt, each, 1 from Somalia and 20 from Kosovo.
