SARAJEVO, February 27 (FENA) - Every year the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina records 30,000 to 40,000 people with flu-like symptoms.
The FBiH Public Health Institute told FENA that a total of 19,632 people with flu-like symptoms have been recorded in the flu season, eight of which have so far been recorded as deceased.
As the Institute says, the flu season usually begins in December, with the largest number of people recorded in January-February, at the same time when the largest number of severe flu cases is recorded.
They point out that in every flu season they also record the number of deaths from influenza complications.
With the enhancement of laboratory diagnostics, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina also records flu-related deaths.
Thus, the FBiH Public Health Institute reported ten deaths in the 2014/2015 season, 11 in the season 2015/2016, three in the 2016/2017 season, and so far, in the 2017/2018 season, eight deaths have been recorded.
“Most of the deceased have already had some sort of a chronic illness. They are mostly unvaccinated or have unknown vaccine status. This flu season is characterized by the widespread distribution and the average severity,” the FBiH Public Health Institute said.
Those suffering from flu-like symptoms are recorded from the beginning of the season, but the first laboratory confirmation was recorded in mid-November.
According to the Clinical Microbiology of the University Clinical Center of Sarajevo, a flu virus type B was detected in early November, and it dominated the samples until the end of January.
Flu virus type A H1N1 pnd09 was detected for the first time in the third week of January. Current flu is type A and type B influenza. Epidemiological surveillance of flu begins in October and ends in May.
