SARAJEVO, March 1 (FENA) - On the occasion of the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sarajevo Canton, the City of Sarajevo, the Sarajevo municipalities and the BiH Parliamentarians' Forum marked the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina with a solemn academy held at the Sarajevo City Hall today.

Following the paying of the anthem of BiH and reading of the text "Congratulations to the Homeland" by Miodrag Trifunov, speaker of the then parliament of the Republic of BiH which voted the Declaration of Independence, Miro Lazović addressed the parliamentarians, councilors, diplomatic corps, and representatives of all levels of government in the country.

Lazović said that 1 March is the birthday of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reminding that the citizens of BiH massively turned to the referendum of 1992 demanding an independent BiH, as an equal state of its citizens and peoples.

Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Semiha Borovac in her address on the occasion of the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina pointed out that all of the gathered at the City Hall, which stands as a symbol of suffering of the city and the country, but at the same time it is a symbol of reconstruction, are well aware of the importance of 1 March and the significance of the referendum decision which restored the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“For more than a quarter of a century, the flag of our country has been present at East River. I am convinced that the full affirmation of the idea of independence will be achieved on the day when our flag is raised in front of the European Parliament, as well as at NATO headquarters in Brussels,” said Minister Borovac.

She stressed that memberships in the European Union and the NATO are of immense significance for Bosnia and Herzegovina's prosperity in political, economic, security aspect and every other way.
