SARAJEVO, March 8 (FENA) - Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Chairman of the Bishops' Conference of Austria, and Cardinal Vinko Puljić, Chairman of the Bishops’ Conference of BiH, urged today, at a press conference in Sarajevo, the BiH politicians to engage in responsible behavior in order to stop the creation of tensions and distrust that endanger coexistence in the country and to take steps to build just peace and equality.
Cardinal Puljić emphasized human rights, dignity and equality as important principles to be respected and said that what one seeks for himself and his people must be acknowledged to the other.
“People are leaving because of the burden of this tension in the public, laws need to be passed where we will all be equal before the law,” he said.
Cardinal Christoph Schönborn noted that in BiH, despite the fact that the war has long since passed, there has not yet been any just peace. Therefore, bishops from Austria, together with the bishops from BiH, appeal to all the holders of responsibility in the state and the international community to engage in the construction of just peace.
He is also concerned about the migration that is happening to this country and, as he said, is affecting all ethnic groups in BiH, “primarily Catholics who lived in certain areas, and in those areas, they are almost all gone."
“We will certainly support BiH in taking the steps towards European integration and becoming part of European unity,” he said.
The Austrian Episcopal Conference was holding its session in Sarajevo from 5 to 8 March. The host to the Austrian bishops was the Bishops' Conference of BiH, led by Cardinal Vinko Puljić.
