Mektić: Perimeter of migrants' entry has stretched towards Višegrad

SARAJEVO, March 14 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina's Minister of Security Dragan Mektić warned today that additional problem with regard to illegal migrants is the fact that their flow, which was until now active only toward Trebinje, has now stretched towards Višegrad, i.e. the eastern part of the country.

“Now we have a fairly wide part of the border through which they enter and it creates serious problems for us. However, the situation in BiH is not alarming, because we are managing this crisis. We are still not in such a complex situation that we must activate a plan related to the migration crisis,” Mr. Mektić pointed out at a press conference in Sarajevo.

According to UNHCR, there are between 45,000 and 50,000 migrants between Greece and BiH.

“Given that the situation in Serbia, Macedonia and Croatia qualifies as stable and that the agreement between Turkey and the European Union is functioning, one can assume that the indicated number of migrants intends to go via the Western Balkans route from Turkey to Greece, from Greece to Albania, from Albania to BiH. I have spoken on this issue several times, and I will also stress this at tomorrow's conference in Slovenia, attended by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini,” Mr. Mektić announced.

He underlined that BiH coordinates all activities related to illegal migration with international organizations such as UNHCR and the Red Cross.

On the other hand, Mr. Mektić is not satisfied with the cooperation with the countries of the Western Balkans, stressing that readmission agreements are not being respected.

“Everyone is trying to shift the responsibility to their neighbors,” says Mr. Mektić.

In addition to saying that the number of illegal migrants is significantly increasing, he stresses that the number of attempts to illegally cross the border is also increasing, where the BiH Border Police successfully detects illegal migrants and does not allow them to enter BiH.

The BiH Minister of Security drew attention to the fact that the issue of strengthening the Border Police is not being solved, and noted that "one-fifth of the positions of police officers in the Border Police is vacant, which is 500 officers".
