ICRC supports missing persons' families and young scholars dealing with search

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 21 (FENA) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organizes two workshops related to missing persons held this week in Banja Luka, with more than 60 representatives of associations of families of missing persons, members of the academia and students.

Also, today, at the Academy of Arts of the University of Banja Luka, five documentaries will be shown, made in cooperation between the ICRC and the Pravo Ljudski film festival.

During the working meeting with associations of families, in the past two days, a review was made of the work in 2017, and the focus was on 18 psychosocial support projects supported by the ICRC, which benefited 5,033 members of the families of the missing persons.

The ICRC presented to the representatives of these associations its five-year strategy for missing persons in the territory of the former Yugoslavia and received their support.

The head of the ICRC delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Filipović, said that he would continue working with associations of families in the future through psychosocial support projects, in cooperation with civil society and academia.

“In addition, the ICRC will continue to encourage authorities to respond to the legal and other needs of families and provide them with answers,” Mr. Filipović added.

The ICRC Strategy also foresees financial and technical assistance to students of the second and third cycles, who want to study scientifically specific topics related to the process of searching for missing persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The search for missing persons is a complex social issue whose comprehensive resolution requires a multidisciplinary approach. This includes following various scientific areas, such as forensics, psychology, law, social and political science.

More than 30 interested students and members of the academia from these areas gathered at the second ICRC workshop that started today, in order to learn more about the individual and social consequences of the loss faced by families of missing persons. The participants came from various faculties from Tuzla, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, East Sarajevo and Mostar, the International Committee of the Red Cross stated.
