JAHORINA, March 23 (FENA) - It is much better for children to grow up in a family, if not the biological, then in the foster family, instead of the institutions for the care of children, the participants concluded on the second day of the interactive workshop "Every child needs a family" held today at Jahorina, within the framework of UNICEF's program "Transformation of childcare institutions and the prevention of separation of families".
Namely, no matter how much educators in institutions wish to give their best to every child without parental care, they are simply not able, which is one of the reasons why the family environment is better than institutional accommodation for a child.
Adnan Podžo, director of the Center for Social Work of the Sarajevo Canton, listed the causes that lead to the separation of the child from the family, and those are mainly economic factors, that is, the absence of parents because they are trying to make ends meet, because of inter-parental relationships, behavior of children and the death of one or both parents.
However, as he pointed out, 60 percent of those children are separated from families due to economic factors.
At the end of his presentation, he noted that the new Foster Care Act of the Federation of BiH strengthens monitoring so that foster families will be much better monitored.
