SARAJEVO, March 29 (FENA) - According to the monitoring of three public broadcasters conducted during the pre-election campaign for 2016 Local Elections, the public broadcasters did not meet the standards of professionalism, said today the participants of the conference "Analysis of Three Public Broadcasters' Primetime Newscasts Broadcast in the Pre-Election Campaign for 2016 Local Elections" held at the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The conference was addressed by the director of "Pod Lupom" Coalition Dario Jovanović, the general secretary of the Association of BiH journalists Borka Rudić and media expert Mehmed Halilović.

The focus of this research were media reports in the primetime informative programs of three public radio and television broadcasters in Bosnia and Herzegovina: BHT, FTV and RTRS. The focus of the research were the statements of political entities in the BiH public broadcasters, with the aim of determining how much attention the media devoted to information on local elections.

Dario Jovanović emphasized that this monitoring had been done with the aim of pointing to the importance of objective reporting.

The results of the analyzes of BiH public broadcasters’ primetime newscasts, broadcast during the 2016 Local Elections, were presented by Borka Rudić.

Among other things, Ms. Rudić said that 63 newscasts and 11 political candidates were reviewed in the period from 18 September to 9 October 2016 on three public broadcasters and a total of 697 news reports were analyzed.

Ms. Rudić presented the numerical statistics of the candidate's presence according to which it is noticeable that the candidates who are in power are more represented.

During the monitored period, in the reporting of three BiH public broadcasters, RTRS devoted most of the coverage to Milorad Dodik - 32min and 46s. When it comes to the leaders of the other two major political parties in BiH, RTRS did not report at all on Bakir Izetbegović, while Dragan Čović was present in 31 seconds of content.

At FTV, during the same period, the appearance of Milorad Dodik was recorded during 7min and 15s, followed by Bakir Izetbegović with a duration of 5min and 12s, while Dragan Čović was present during 1min 58s.

The highest level of equivalency between the three mentioned politicians was recorded in BHT’s program: Bakir Izetbegović appeared during 1min 55s; Dragan Čović 1min 40s; Milorad Dodik 1min 52s.

The participants stressed that this analysis had shown that public broadcasters primarily provided space to those political parties that are in power, the parties' officials. They also emphasized that these media rarely had a neutral or professional attitude towards political subjects; it was mainly either positive or negative.
