Associations - Serbia is making a mockery of war crimes processes

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 29 (FENA) - The Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement "Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves" reacted today on the manner that war crimes are being processed in Serbia.

Namely, today, a hearing before the Belgrade Higher Court's War Crimes Section for the shooting of at least 1,313 Bosniaks in the Kravice hangar, was canceled, after the first defendant, Nedeljko Milidragović did not appear at the main trial.

The Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement "Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves" remind that the trial of eight VRS Special Police officers for the shooting of more than 1,300 civilians in hangar Kravice had started on 6 February last year and that only one hearing has been held so far.

“The defendants, who have been out on bail during the trial, have so far failed to appear before the court without any penalties, as a result of which the hearing kept being canceled. This is a mockery of the judiciary and not a judicial process. Up to now, about a dozen hearings have been scheduled in this case, and until now only one has been held. If Belgrade continues with this practice, the trial can go on indefinitely,” reads a joint statement by the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement "Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves".

They point out that, “despite the perception that Serbia is prosecuting the perpetrators of genocide in Srebrenica, it is clear that Serbia is making a mockery of the processes, a show for its domestic audience".

“There is no greater insult to us victims than the fact that the accused of shooting of over 1,300 our loved ones avoid appearing in court without repercussion. Larger penalties are given for non-payment of misdemeanor punishment than for murdering such a large number of people. Shameful!”, the statement reads.

As further stated, the victims, the families of the victims watch the trials, and are constantly exposed to humiliation, "because those who killed their loved ones are walking around as free people".

“Today's hearing was marked by the gathering of Vojislav Šešelj and some of his supporters who watched the trial, and he, in the familiar style, insulted everyone around him who did not have anything Serb about them. Šešelj, proud of his radicalism, did not shy away from offending Kada Hotić today, whose brother was murdered in Kravice, whose head was cut off and his bones fractured, which led to a verbal altercation between them and several journalists,” the statement reads.

Therefore, the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement “Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves” call on judicial institutions in Serbia to resist political games and finally prosecute war crimes with seriousness and respect for innocent victims.
