SARAJEVO, April 4 (FENA) – International Mine Awareness Day, marked on April 4, is an opportunity to point to a problem of landmines and other explosive ordnance left after war.

Director of the FBiH Civil Protection Administration (FUCZ) Fahrudin Solak told FENA that BiH is "the most contaminated" country in Europe and that landmines and minefields in BiH pose great danger.

"Every year there is a certain number of our fellow citizens who get injured in minefields. That is maybe the greatest danger in BiH. There is still around three percent of surface in BiH. More than 70 percent of minefields are in the Federation of BiH, with total surface covering more than 1.000 square kilometers," said Solak.

He emphasized that FBiH Civil Protection Administration, as a demining organization, invests maximum effort to raise awareness of citizens, especially in spring period, when people want to go to nature.

"We will try and make a project of virtual application, interactive application, with colleagues from BH MAC, UNDP and European Commission so we can all access the application and see where we stand from the minefields. I hope we will be able to finish it this year," said Solak.

He finds it will take a long period of time to "see BiH without landmines, if we do not apply new methods."

He added there were six or seven incidents in minefields in the Federation last year, where two persons were killed.

Member of the FBiH Civil Protection Administration Jasmin Imširović said that everyone knows how dangerous and demanding demining is.

"Deminer firstly needs to have a will to do this job, because no one can make him. If he decides to do it, he should do it responsibly. Then there is definitely training of deminers," emphasized Imširović.

He added that FUCZ pays great attention to training, because standards of operational procedures change in minefields and demining over time.

Imširović told citizens of BiH to be careful and not take any chances, but to respect the rules and markings that warn of landmines.

Demining teams of the FBiH Civil Protection Administration will demonstrate humanitarian demining in front of SCC in Sarajevo today.

Goal of this activity is to raise awareness of the widest population on problem of landmine contamination and difficulties connected to demining and creating a safe environment.
