Seven local communities in BIH join in disasters risk reduction

SARAJEVO, April 12 (FENA) - The analyses conducted in the past period showed that Bosnia and Herzegovina is vulnerable to natural disasters, but also that it is rather unprepared, as it turned out in 2014, when BiH was hit by unprecedented floods.

In order to prevent such scale of damage to occur again, it is important to act preventively and to ensure connection between all the competent levels of government and units of local self-government, to which the representatives of seven BiH municipalities have pledged today in Sarajevo by signing the Declaration on Disaster Risk Reduction.

This document is part of a project titled "Interconnecting in Disaster Risk Management in BiH", for which the Republic of Italy provided the necessary funds, and the project will be implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Italian Ambassador to BiH Nicola Minasi explained that the project is financed by Italy in the amount of 355,000 euros, and should have a direct impact on 460,000 people living in seven BiH local communities (Tuzla, Brčko Distrikt, Doboj, Laktaši, Lukavac, Maglaj and Zvornik).

The key activities of the project are to develop an assessment of strategic capacities and action plans, to improve the entity legislation framework for civil protection and to improve the management of disaster risks.

The partners of this project are the Ministry of Security of BiH, the FBiH Civil Protection Administration, the Civil Protection Administration of RS, the Brčko District Public Safety Department, cities of Doboj and Tuzla, the cantonal and municipal authorities and other agencies.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in BiH Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov underlined that a usual way to tackle disasters was dealing with it after it occurs, but it is much cheaper and more efficient to approach disasters in the context of preventive action.

He pointed out that the projects will also include the so-called Disaster Risk Analysis System which will enable municipalities to obtain information on potential disasters before they occur, especially in the areas that are prone to natural disasters such as landslides, floods, fires, droughts or earthquakes.
