Sweden and UNICEF in partnership for improving child protection in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 17 (FENA) - Following the past excellent collaboration, Sweden and UNICEF announced today a new thematic partnership in the child protection sector for the next 4 years, with financial support in the amount of Swedish Kronor 15 million (around 2 million USD).

Recognizing the importance of long term and multi-sectoral interventions in child protection, UNICEF Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Geeta Narayan thanked Sweden for their continued support to UNICEF.

“Child protection interventions are interlinked and require many sectors to engage, and at times, require bold innovations. Therefore, it is important to have predictable, relatively flexible funding for child protection that surpasses project-based activities. The approach that Sweden is taking under this new grant represents a solid base for sustainable partnership. I would like to congratulate Sweden for pioneering such an approach, and to reaffirm UNICEF’s commitment to achieving results for children. We will honor Swedish trust and confidence in us under this new era of partnership,” said Ms. Narayan.

Head of the Swedish International Development Agency Marie Bergstrom said that Sweden is happy supporting the UNICEF Country Program Document with focus on Child Protection. “This is for us a modern way of working, going away from project support to a trustful, flexible and equal partnership.  We are happy seeing different agencies and institutions working together under this project in BiH. Children and young people deserve our full attention,” said Ms. Bergstrom.

The new partnership will enable UNICEF and its partners to enhance children’s protection from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation, prevent unnecessary family separation and improve children’s access to justice. Key expected results include:

Improved child-friendly justice services for child victims and witnesses, children involved in civil and administrative proceedings and children in conflict with the law and enhanced equitable access to services.

Realization of every child’s right to grow up in a family environment through strengthening services aimed at preventing family separation and deinstitutionalization, including through strengthening of foster care systems.

Strengthening availability of and access to multi-sectoral services and interventions to prevent and respond to violence against children, including targeted behavior change campaigns, stated the UNICEF Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
