SARAJEVO, April 24 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina to us is not only a European country, but also a country that belongs in the EU, said Christiane Hohmann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to BiH, who held a lecture in the Academy of Sciences and Art of BiH on the theme "Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU Approach - Perspective and Challenge".
The challenges are many, but there are many chances and opportunities, because, as she added, this is a two-way street that has potential for everyone.
“The question is how will we manage to get closer to what we, as the European Union, consider to be the most essential,” Ms. Hohmann added.
According to her, protection of consumer rights, freedom of movement and health care, which are very important in the EU, are not guaranteed on a daily basis in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“We must also acknowledge that there are challenges in the EU such as Brexit and the economic crisis that began in the early 2000s, as well as political differences between member states, developments in some member states that are far below the EU standards. So, this is not a monolithic block where everything is fine. We all share the fundamental principles that no one brings into question, but when someone does bring them into question, things like Brexit happen,” said Ms. Hohmann.
In terms of this region, according to her, in the last 15 years, the influence of the Eastern and Western blocs has increased. World crises are constantly happening, only locations change. Ms. Hohmann said that the EU was very busy because of all these crises, so BiH must compete with them to get the European Union's attention.
“The agreement from Thessaloniki, which we call an "open door policy" towards the countries of the Western Balkans is one of these fundamental values that is not being brought into question,” Ms. Hohmann added.
