Pahor: BiH has a great friend and support in Slovenia

SARAJEVO, April 25 (FENA) – Addressing the participants of the Sarajevo Business Forum, President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor today stressed the support of his country to Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries of the Western Balkans in their efforts to become members of the EU and NATO.

Mr. Pahor said they were ready to share their experiences and knowledge in order for these countries, including BiH, to become EU and NATO members as soon as possible, if so decided in those countries.

“After the global economic crisis in 2008, the EU hesitated with the expansion, that is, the progressive enlargement process in the EU was stopped, but now, after five years, the general recovery of the European and global economy and the interest of this region revived the political will for the EU enlargement process, which I strongly support. I believe it is a mistake that the European Commission does not regard the process of enlargement of the Union in the Western Balkans as a political process, what it actually is, but considers it a technical process which it is not and it will prove particularly difficult in the case of BiH. The BiH state regulation is special and, in my opinion, demands a very cautious political approach to the European Union and I am committed to such an approach," Mr. Pahor added.

After Croatia becoming a member and the expected accession of Serbia, Mr. Pahor added, it is hard to imagine that BiH will remain outside the EU for a long time.

“The most important thing is that the countries of the Western Balkans themselves ensure the credibility of the reform process, in particular by implementing reforms to strengthen the rule of law, aligning legislation with the EU legislation and building the institutions necessary for general progress. Regional cooperation remains the most important tool for promoting reconciliation and prosperity,” Mr. Pahor emphasized.

Although the Slovenian economy, as he added, is oriented towards the Western market, the countries of the Western Balkans are the second most important foreign trade partner of Slovenia.
