SARAJEVO, April 26 (FENA) - The International Girls in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Day is marked on the fourth Thursday in April each year as an initiative launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations for information and communication technologies.
On this occasion, today, in the building of the UN in BiH, seven best ideas of girls from 16 to 18 years old were presented, who showed the best results in the online competition #TehnoMašta for designing mobile applications that can improve society.
The competition was launched by the IT Girls initiative supported by the United Nations in BiH.
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Sezin Sinanoglu stressed that girls around the world, including BiH, were not sufficiently involved in the information sector.
She pointed out that the goal was to encourage and empower young women to learn more about information technologies and to decide to have careers in the ICT sector.
“In Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have a joint project where UN, UNICEF and UNDP work together with the support of the Swedish Embassy, within which we are working on increasing digital, IT literacy and encouraging girls to get involved in the ICT sector,” Ms. Sinanoglu said.
Director of the Swedish International Development Coopeation Agency (Sida), Marie Bergström, expressed her satisfaction with the fact that in this way girls are given an opportunity to become more involved in the ICT sector.
The IT Girls initiative was created as a result of the best idea in the competition of young United Nations employees in Bosnia and Herzegovina, entitled "Innovation Competition for Under 30 Years".
What is characteristic of IT Girls is the use of social networks as the primary means of communicating with girls and promotion of portals for free and easy learning about programming.
