SARAJEVO, May 15 (FENA) - Women's share in directorial positions in the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina is about 25 percent and the worst gender structure is on directing positions in the television sector, according to a survey conducted by the Association of BiH Journalists.

The results of this research, confirming gender imbalances at the expense of women, especially in management media structures, will be discussed in the next two days at a conference in Sarajevo on the topic "Position and protection of female journalists in the BiH media".

The meeting was opened by the OSCE Mission chief Bruce Berton, with whose assistance the conference was convened and organized, stressing that it is important to protect female journalists, especially due to the evident political and financial pressure that media workers are exposed to.

“This prevents the media from serving the public and meeting the needs of the public, and pressure on female journalists is at an even higher level,” Mr. Berton said, reminding that women carry a double burden because they are both journalists and women, all of which lead to self-censorship.

He called on female journalists not to give up on their profession, promising that the OSCE Mission would do everything in their power to protect the rights of female journalists.

Swedish ambassador to BiH Anders Hagelberg estimated that there was increasingly less space for the work of the media, as more and more media freedom is restricted, along with access to public documents.

He also proposed that a network of female journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina be formed in order for them to be able to support each other and fight for the protection of their rights.

The President of the Association of BiH Journalists Marko Divković talked about the position of female journalists on tasks where they often encounter the roughness of the male world, emphasizing a special lack of solidarity and saying that there are more women than men in journalism, but that he does not notice any serious indications of solidarity which is what needs to be discussed.

Civil Rights Defenders Program Coordinator Ena Bavčić believes that this is the right time to think about where women are today, not only in the field of journalism but also in the society in general, adding that the need to talk about the position of female journalists has recently been noticed.

She referred to the attacks on female journalists, saying that it is necessary to deal with the problem more thoroughly and that often the attack on the female journalist involves an attack on honor, reputation and integrity.

Among other things, research by the Association of BiH Journalists has shown that women occupy one third of all analyzed positions of the editors-in-chief in the media, while the share of men is two-thirds, whereas the majority of women are in the positions of editor-in-chief in the radio sector (44.7 percent) and the least of them are in online media, where women make up 21.7 percent appointed at these positions.

Participants of the first conference in BiH on the position and protection of women in the BiH media will try to answer the question about the modalities and possibilities of organizing the media sector in accordance with gender equality, as well as the greater representation of women in management and editorial positions in the media.
