World Vision BiH - Children refugees and migrants in BiH want to be like others

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 1 (FENA) - World Vision BiH stated that today, on the International Children's Day, it is keeping track of the situation, and raising awareness of it, as well as to the needs of children from Syria, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan and other countries that, with and without escort, legally and illegally enter BiH, another stop on their path of uncertainty.

They say that today in BiH there are children refugees and migrants, with interrupted childhoods and uncertain future, forced to spend their childhood in hostels, tents, refugee centers and in the streets of unknown cities exposed to various risks.

They also point out that they have learned through contact with them that these boys and girls want nothing more than equal opportunities as other children. And their needs are painfully modest and often include only the most basic – adequate nutrition or at least regular meals, clean clothes and adequate footwear, access to education and healthcare, and a place where they can feel safe.

World Vision BiH has put its human and material resources in service to help migrant and refugee families with children and it is working with partner organizations to address their critical needs.

In cooperation with Red Cross BiH, families with children and individuals in need were donated and distributed cushions, covers, footwear and clothing, and provided support to a group of volunteers who help families in around Sarajevo, providing hygiene packages and baby diapers, as well as basic kitchen food preparation items for adults and children.

In cooperation with UNICEF, and with the support of the Swedish Development Agency - Sida, preparations have been started for the establishment of the much-needed Children's Center and the Center for Mothers and Babies in the Salakovac Refugee Center, which will provide a safe and stimulating space in which mothers and children can get the necessary psychological and information-educational support, and children will have the opportunity and space to play, socialize, have access to educational and entertaining content, as well as access to professional support.

In addition, World Vision BiH, in cooperation with partner organizations UNICEF, SOS Children's Villages BiH, Save the Children and EMAUS, has launched an initiative for a comprehensive assessment of the situation on the ground and insight into the needs of families with children and refugee and migrant children in BiH.
