FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 17 (FENA) - Representatives of the Association of Anti-fascists and Fighters of the National Liberation War (SABNOR) of BiH, but also from other anti-fascist associations from Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia, today marked the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Sutjeska.

Anti-fascists laid wreaths and remembered one of the greatest battles of World War II in this region where 7,543 fighters lost their lives.

The Battle of Sutjeska lasted from May 15 to June 16, 1943 and was the decisive battle of the fifth offensive of the enemy.

Almost 127,000 German, Italian, Bulgarian soldiers and Ustasha soldiers, with the support of 300 airplanes, held surrounded some 22,000 partisans aiming for total annihilation.

On June 10, 1943, the first proletarian division broke through the enemy ring on Sutjeska, and the battle ended on June 15, 1943 with the breakthrough of the large part of the soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army.

The most important messages from today's event are that anti-fascism in these regions is not dead, that there are many who want to continue to cultivate the tradition of anti-fascism, and that the values of the national liberation war, such as coexistence, are indestructible and lasting, that the glorious past must not be forgotten and that these events teach us lessons that we can apply today.
