Public survey - 56.52 percent of BiH citizens support country’s EU accession

SARAJEVO, June 18 (FENA) - The Council of Ministers of BiH today took note of the Information on citizens' opinion on EU membership and the integration process conducted by the Directorate for European Integration.

The results of this year's survey show that 56.52 percent of BiH citizens in the referendum would give their support to the membership. However, the support in RS (30.3 percent) is significantly lower in than in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (70.6 percent) and in the Brčko District of BiH (75.5 percent).

Compared to the previous two annual surveys, the percentage of respondents who do not know or do not want to say how they would vote has increased.

The reason for supporting integration in the EU in majority of cases were improvement of infrastructure (34.8 percent), followed by the freedom of movement of people, goods and capital and compliance with the laws and regulations.

Fear of increased living costs and taxes (66.5 percent) was the most common reason for opposing the membership in the EU.

According to the citizens of BiH, reducing tax burden on labor and removing obstacles to employment (74.4 percent), fighting corruption and reforming public administration are the most important reforms to be undertaken.

Asked what would be the reasons the EU is interested to take in Bosnia and Herzegovina, respondents indicated the expansion of the European market and securing of peace and stability as the most important reasons.

Among the topics related to the integration process, respondents were mostly interested in the impact of EU membership on their day-to-day lives.

The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,200 adult citizens of BiH, in a computer-assisted telephone method (CATI), stated the Directorate for European Integration of BiH.
