FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 19 (FENA) - Media and civil society organizations play an important role in post-conflict processes of building of peace and society of tolerance. Under such circumstances journalists must be more responsible and professional, because media content they produce affects the culture and behavior of citizens, it was stated at a workshop on "Transitional Justice and Reporting", which started in Sarajevo today.

Six-day workshop, organized by Association BH Journalists with support of Danish organization International Media Support (IMS), gathered 11 journalists and civil society activists from Syria and Iraq.

"Media houses and civil society organizations must be more responsible and creative in reporting under war and post-war social circumstances. Journalists and activists must be aware how media content and activities of civil sector significantly affect perception of reality, culture and behavior of citizens," said IMS media adviser Henrik Keith Hansen and emphasized that society in specific conflict circumstances needs journalists to report in innovative way, focusing on solutions and those who can take a step forward from conventional reporting.

Program Director of IMS Osama Hababe said that journalists of BiH experienced war and transitional journalism in a more recent history, adding he hopes that the workshop in Sarajevo will help and contribute to building of peace and media scene in Iraq and Syria.

Secretary General of Association BH Journalists Borka Rudić emphasized importance of organization of journalists in professional associations, especially in conflict and post-conflict context.

"That is important to present ethical principles and integration of media community and for contribution to development of media laws and institutions, as well as the infrastructure needed for free media and work of journalists," emphasized Rudić.

During six days of educational program, participants will learn and discuss standards of fair, balanced and objective reporting on sensitive topics regarding war and violation of human rights, transitional justice and facing the past, documentation of war crimes and media contribution to building of peace and stability.
