Izetbegović: Denial of genocide has moved into the phase of its glorification

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 26 (FENA) - President of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), Bakir Izetbegović, in a press release issued yesterday on the occasion of increasingly frequent and aggravated insults at the expense of victims of the genocide in Srebrenica and the Bosniak people in general, stated that the denial of genocide against the Bosniaks has switched into the phase of its glorification.

“Silence of the political, intellectual and religious elite of the Serb people in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina is shameful and inhumane choosing to ignore savagely and morbid insults that Milorad Dodik and other Serb officials increasingly and more aggressively express towards the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica and Bosniaks in general,” Izetbegović said, adding that these are not isolated incidents, but a growing behavior.

At the same time, he warns that the negation of the genocide committed against Bosniaks has moved into the phase of its glorification, and that such a phenomenon and such an attitude towards genocide has never been recorded in history and nowhere in the world.

“Cynical and spiteful insults of the deceased Hatidža Mehmedović and the victims of genocide in Srebrenica by the Deputy Chair of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Vjerica Radeta are just the last in a row among countless of them. Similar offenses were expressed previously by convicted war criminal Vojislav Šešelj, who still serves as an MP in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia,” stressed Izetbegović.

Furthermore, the RS president Milorad Dodik, while appearing in the Serbian capital in a TV show, insulted the Muslim religious feelings with the anti-civilization statements of describing a call to prayer (azaan) as shouting and screaming and referred to the Bosniak people as "the occupiers of Podrinje".

“Dodik denies their mother tongue the Bosnian language, on a daily basis. And now he is trying to review the previously adopted reports of the RS institutions on the established facts about the genocide in Srebrenica.

Members of his political party also persistently and publicly offend the victims of genocide. The proof that these are not only individual actions and isolated incidents is seen in the fact that Dodik and RS institutions have awarded medals and recognitions to convicted war criminals Radovan Karadžić, Biljana Plavšić, Momčilo Krajišnik and many others,” says Izetbegović.

Iztbegović is of the opinion is that all this has been going on for too long, that it has gone beyond any measure of decency, and that the leading Serb political and religious authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia have never, unequivocally and publicly distanced themselves from the above-mentioned behavior.

The SDA president emphasizes that their silence ominously resembles the same silence that encouraged and allowed horrific crimes committed during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which culminated with the genocide in Srebrenica.

“If the Serb leaders really respect Bosniaks and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as they often say, it is high time for them to speak up and react to these insults. If they continue with the silence, we will understand this as their approval of all the insults committed at the expense of Bosniaks and victims of the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Such a message to Bosniaks and Bosnia and Herzegovina will surely question the further process of reconciliation and normalization of relations,” concluded Izetbegović.
