SARAJEVO, August 1 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović said today that he has been the biggest advocate for the Euro-NATO path of BiH, but that the failure to pass the Election Law has prevented BiH from obtaining a candidate status.

After today’s session of the BiH Presidency, he said that it is almost certain that we will not get a candidate status for EU membership within the current election cycle.

He pointed out that, when it comes to the construction of the Pelješac Bridge, too much has been said so far and that this was not discussed at today's session of the BiH Presidency, except for just short exchange of information.

“We were informed each other about the recent activities we have undertaken, but that was not an item on the agenda. Today, this is only a topic to serve the election campaign of political parties in Sarajevo, and this likely to continue,” said Čović.

He believes that the construction of the Pelješac Bridge is a positive thing, pointing out that "the bridge is in the interest of the entire BiH, and not just the Croat people in BiH".

He also commented on the migrant crisis in BiH saying that a few days ago they gathered all the representatives of the institutions in BiH with legal responsibilities and jurisdiction, and stressed that the border must be closed.

“We all understand that the situation is very serious. We need to control who enters BiH, and for that we need funds and personnel. There was a problem with financial resources, but I hope we will resolve it,” said Čović.

He reminded that, according to the existing law, migrants can stay 14 days on the territory of BiH from the moment they seek asylum.

“We said that we have a strong enough parliamentary majority to change that. Nobody has been granted asylum yet because these are obviously economic migrants. We want to change this 14-day period into 24 hours. This means that the migrant is kept at the border for 24 hours and that he will be returned from where he came from. This is the position that my political party stands for,” underlined Čović, pointing out that the migrant crisis is being abused and that today it is a bigger business than smuggling narcotics.

Čović warned that the migrant crisis could worsen further in the winter period.

At the meeting with Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, scheduled for this evening, he said that he will not discuss the Pelješac Bridge, but different projects and what comes in near future.
