BiH CoM holds a meeting on the issues of migrants and border protection

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 6 (FENA) - Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdić said today in Sarajevo, at a working-consultation meeting with Minister of Security of BiH Dragan Mektić and representatives of the police and security institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, that one of the most important priorities is the protection of the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to prevent further increase in illegal entries into Bosnia and Herzegovina, and asked all the competent institutions to continue to strengthen border control by increased presence of police officers, preventing illegal transport and preventing the smuggling of migrants.

Zvizdić especially emphasized the importance and urgency of resolving the issue of accommodation of migrants in the Una-Sana Canton area, underlining the commitment of the BiH Council of Ministers in terms of humane approach and action in accordance with domestic laws and international standards.

The participants of the meeting discussed strategic activities related to the increased number of migrants and the protection of the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to prevent further increase in illegal entries.

They emphasized that the prolonged detention of illegal migrants in BiH occurs due to failure of the countries from which migrants illegally enter to comply with the readmission agreement with BiH, as well as the lack of agreements with some of the countries from which illegal migrants originate.

After the undertaken measures and activities in July, there has been decrease in the number of illegal entries in Bosnia and Herzegovina compared to the previous period, with the expectation that this trend will be maintained.

Bosnia and Herzegovina supports the EU policies and wants to be part of a common solution.

In this regard, BiH expects the continuation of financial and international technical assistance from the EU, stated the Council of Ministers of BiH.
