Increased presence of hate speech in the BiH media

FENA Alma Zukanović

VLAŠIĆ, August 26 (FENA) - President of the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faruk Zupčević said that there is a lot hate speech in the media in BiH, but that this area is not fully defined and properly regulated.

This was the main topic of the roundtable discussion on "Hate speech in the media", which was held yesterday on Mt Vlašić, organized by the Association of Journalists of BiH and the OSCE Mission to BiH.

The topics discussed today were "Hate Speech in the Public and the Media", "Hate Speech - Definition and Legal / Self / Regulation" and "Role and Responsibility of the Media / in the Fight against or for the Dissemination of Hate Speech".

Zupčević pointed out that anonymity and a sense of physical safety in the use of the Internet have recently increased the number of hate speech cases in BiH and that the roundtable participants have tried to find answers to questions on how and in what way to prevent hate speech and help young people use the Internet responsibly.

A spokesman for the OSCE Mission to BiH, Zlatan Musić, said that they recognized the problem of hate speech in the media, and therefore decided to support the initiative of the BiH Journalists’ Association to discuss the topic.

He believes that before and during the election campaign period for the general elections in BiH there has an evident increase in hate speech in the public space within the media sphere and that it is primarily necessary to recognize this problem and find the way to sanction it.

Musić emphasized that hate speech brings long-term consequences for BiH society and that it is necessary to work and raise the awareness of citizens that hate speech does not bring anything good and that it does not provide the citizens with the opportunity to make good decisions.

Participants of the two-day roundtable on Mt Vlašić, besides the representatives of the Association of Journalists of BiH, were representatives of some of the leading media in BiH: FENA, BHRT, ATV, Al Jazeera, RTRS, Patria, Dani, N1 and others, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, Coalition "Pod lupom", The Communications Regulatory Agency, and professors Nermina Mujagić (Sarajevo), Miodrag Živanović (Banja Luka) and Slavo Kukić (Mostar).

The company Centrotrans also supported the organization of the event.
