Journalists urge the media to use the banner 'STOP Violence against Journalists'

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 27 (FENA) - The BH Journalists Association Steering Board calls on all media in Bosnia and Herzegovina to send a unified request tomorrow to the authorities in Republika Srpska and the country as a whole that violence against journalists must stop, and to publish black banners in their media, the press, the Internet the portals and on TV, with the message "STOP Violence against Journalists in BiH".

In this way, as they stressed, the media representatives will show the authorities, public officials and institutions that the media and the journalism community of BiH will not tolerate any form of violence and endangering the freedom of the media and the safety of journalists.

The Steering Board of the BH Journalists Association strongly condemns the brutal assault and beating up of Vladimir Kovačević, a journalist and correspondent of BN TV from Banja Luka, who was, on this Sunday, jumped by two masked persons in front of the building where he lives; they kicked him by pull-up sticks and inflicted serious bodily injuries.

We are appalled with the way the attack was carried out, we believe it is an organized and well-planned act aimed at endangering the life of journalist Kovačević and stopping his professional work for BN Television,” it is said in a statement.

They also added that it is particularly worrying that Kovačević was attacked immediately after sending his report from the civil protests at Krajina Square in Banja Luka, where the gathering under the slogan name "Justice for David" is taking place on a daily basis, and came after a series of verbal attacks and political pressure on BNTV from Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik and other officials of the ruling coalition in that entity, stated the Association of BH Journalists.
