JAHORINA, September 2 (FENA) - Media in BiH and neighboring countries need to recognize and avoid sensationalism and false reporting, it was concluded at a workshop “Media and Terrorism”, organized by the OSCE Mission to BiH on Mt. Jahorina.
Presenting conclusions of the workshop to the press, Head of the Mission Ambassador Bruce G. Berton said that media representatives need to carefully choose what to report on and make sure that sensationalism does not affect their reporting.
“Case of a house in Tešanj, where old weapons were found, and report that it was found near a mosque, completely irrelevant information, and stressing Novi Pazar as a junction of radicalization were examples given at one of the panels of the workshop, where Muslims and Islam were demonstrated as a direct security threat,” emphasized Berton.
He said that media plays a key role in igniting interethnic and political tensions.
He noted that media cannot qualify every incident as terrorism and use terminology which has serious connotations, but that journalists need to be led by ethnic standards.
Participants of the workshop also discussed impact that social media has on radicalization and Ambassador Berton added that terrorist groups are aware of power of technology.
“Their messages are not only ideological, they also use messages of rational choice stating that things are better there and that you will fit in,” said Berton and added that young people, who spend most time on the internet, are most susceptible to this.
Workshop ''Media and Terrorism'' gathered more than 100 journalists and media professionals from BiH and abroad, who discussed the newest trends, challenges and standards in area of reporting on terrorism and violent extremism via the internet, print and electronic media.
