Šarović: Successful negotiations in Brussels to protect steel industry in BiH

FENA Press release

BRUSSELS/SARAJEVO, September 12 (FENA) - I expect that Bosnia and Herzegovina, following today's meeting in Brussels, will be exempt from introduction of protective measures on steel imports in the EU, said Mirko Šarović, Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, after the negotiating team of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, presented its arguments to the European Commission, in the so-called "hearings of countries covered by the EU protective measures on steel imports”.

“Our team’s presentation and arguments were clear and thorough, and all the facts presented are in support of the exclusion of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the mentioned set of measures,” said Šarović adding that "the other side had no counterarguments".

The position of the BiH side is primarily based on the fact that the quotas for steel imports could not be imported to Bosnia and Herzegovina, because our country is not a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and that we have signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU.

The teams also stressed the importance of the agreement in the context of economic and political integration of BiH, which was the basis for the exclusion of the countries of the European economic area (Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) from the mentioned measures.

The BiH side also presented the statistical data in favor of the exemption, including analyses that show that imports from our country will not cause damage to the steel industry of the EU member states nor create serious disturbances on the EU market, stated the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH.

Apart from the representatives of the ministry, the attorney team of Arcelor Mittal Zenica, the largest steel exporter from Bosnia and Herzegovina, also participated in the hearing.
