SARAJEVO, September 25 (FENA) - The biggest Chinese shipping company COSCO will open its representative office in Sarajevo this evening, as the fourth office in the region, under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

This initiative, launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping, aims to revive the old and establish new land and sea routes between Asia, Africa and Europe.

COSCO Shipping is one of the leading shipping companies in the world that has more than 1,100 vessels of different types and purposes, explained today in Sarajevo Vladimir Lekić, General Manager of Dragon Maritime, the company via which COSCO operates in Southeast Europe.

“BiH is interesting to us because there is a possibility of using different ports for the market. We are currently offering services through the Rijeka Port, and in the coming period we will talk about the introduction of the services in the Port of Ploče, which will be very significant,” said Lekić.

He pointed out that COSCO as a company was present in BiH in the past, controlling the market from neighboring countries, and the decision to enter BiH directly is directly linked to the  Belt and Road Initiative, but also with the presence of Chinese companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the past five years, BiH has recorded export growth which is seen in the example of containers in which goods come to BiH.

In the past, this was not the case, and most of the container would return empty to China. Now the situation is that the containers are being returned full of goods and are used for the export of cargo from BiH that is mostly addressed to the PR China and the Far East. Most of the goods exported are wood and stone.

Prior to the Sarajevo office, the company has already opened branches in other cities in Southeast Europe such as Koper, Rijeka and Belgrade.

COSCO is currently providing its services through the ports of Rijeka, Koper and Piraeus, and also through Belgrade.
