Poverty and growing social inequality challenge for BiH social workers

SARAJEVO, October 11 (FENA) - Great number of poor and unemployed people and growing social inequality are challenges that social workers in BiH need to deal with, it was emphasized at a Conference on Education of Social Workers in BiH, which is being held in Sarajevo today.

Extraordinary professor at the Social Work Department of the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University in Sarajevo Sanela Šadić said that due to these instances, work of social workers is becoming more complex and challenging.

"Social workers have a lot of work in fixing the social injustice and helping those who cannot keep up with the social tempo that is imposed to us," added Šadić.

President of the Alliance of Social Workers of the Federation of BiH Mirnes Telelović said that all social protection institutions lack social workers, while at the same time there is a great number of them registered as unemployed in Sarajevo Canton.

Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Bruce G. Berton said that the social protection system needs to be enhanced to meet the international standards, adding that the OSCE will continue supporting education of social workers in BiH to protect the most endangered layers of society.

Three panels at the conference will cover important topics in social work and social policy.

Conference is organized by the Alliance of Social Workers of FBiH and the Alliance of Association of Social Workers of RS, with support of the OSCE Mission to BiH.
