BELGRADE/SARAJEVO, November 27 (FENA) - The Serbian court sentenced a female Serb ex-soldier to five years in prison for her involvement in the torture and murder of a Bosnian Army nurse during the 1992-95 conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Belgrade Higher Court on Monday sentenced former Serb soldier Ranka Tomić to five years in prison for participating in the torture and murder of a Bosnian Army nurse in July 1992 during the Bosnian war, BIRN reports.
According to the indictment, Tomić, as captain of the Bosnian Serb Army’s Petrovac Women’s Front, participated in harming and killing the captured nurse, Karmen Kamenčić.
Kamenčić was already wounded in her leg and head when she was captured by the Bosnian Serb Army and turned over to the Petrovac Women’s Front in the Bosnian village of Radić in the western municipality of Bosanska Krupa, the indictment said.
The prosecution accused Tomić of ordering the wounded Kamenčić to crawl on the ground naked and dig her own grave, and of beating and humiliating the captive.
The weakened Kamenčić was then taken to a nearby location in the company of a 15-year-old male, who dug another grave, made her lie in it, and killed her with a round from an automatic rifle.
In its closing statement, the Serbian war crimes prosecutor’s office had asked for a seven-year sentence for Tomić. The first-instance verdict can be appealed.
