SARAJEVO, December 9 (FENA) - A roundtable entitled "Media and Hate Speech" concluded today on Mt Jahorina as part of the project "The Media against Hate Speech".
The project was organized by the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, supported by the OSCE Mission to BiH and the Council of Ministers of BiH.
Fedžad Forto, Secretary-General of the association, said that the researchers of the Journalists' Association, during the election campaign for the General Elections 2018, monitored the media coverage of hate speech, and a part of the results and analysis of monitoring, as well as theoretical and practical insights and recommendations the researchers have compiled in cooperation with several university professors from Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Mostar, were presented today at this roundtable.
Professor Slavo Kukić stressed that the media in BiH are often the source of political messages charged with hate speech, and daily political discussions are often an arena where hate speech messages are spread.
"A separate thing altogether are social networks that serve as channels for spreading hate speech," emphasized Professor Kukić and added that hate speech should be treated as a criminal offense and severely prosecuted.
Participants of the event on Mt Jahorina were journalists from the electronic and print media, representatives of associations and civil society organizations, academic and teaching staff, as well as competent governmental institutions.
