SARAJEVO, December 17 (FENA) - The US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan stated during his visit to Sarajevo today that his country remains committed to protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH, in accordance with the Dayton Peace Agreement.
“We support the aspirations of Bosnia and Herzegovina to join NATO and EU. Attempts to undermine the BiH institutions, calls for secession and forming of a third entity go against the spirit of the Dayton PA, and they represent a threat to the stability of BiH and the entire region,” underlined Sullivan.
He stressed that he does not want to underestimate the challenges in forming the government, but that now is the time for leaders to step up and show courage responsibility and ability to make difficult decisions, accept compromises and move forward.
"The United States, Europe and our other partners will deal firmly against all those who undermine these principles, and for those most extreme ones, the appropriate response includes sanctions in relation to their travels and private possessions," stressed Sullivan.
He pointed out that the United States will work actively with BiH officials against foreign powers seeking to make BiH more vulnerable, as far as internal stability is concerned.
He appealed to all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina not to give priority to protecting ethnic privileges that separate people from one another, but to prioritize policies that open new jobs, give greater chances to the integrated education system and prosperity.
"We believe that ethnic divisions are being created by political leaders in order to remain in power and all citizens of BiH should unite in their desire to end the widespread corruption that drains the wealth of this country and forces the young people to leave it,” Sullivan concluded.
