SARAJEVO, December 27 (FENA) – Democratic European values do not recognize exclusive representation of the people, they only recognize right of every citizen to elect and be elected, emphasized Member of the BiH Presidency Željko Komšić on the occasion of 9th anniversary of ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in the Sejdic-Finci case.

He held a press conference together with Jakob Finci and Dervo Sejdić and reminded that it was determined on 22nd December in 2009 in Sejdic-Finci vs BiH that parts of the BiH Constitution related to election of members of BiH Presidency and House of Peoples of BiH contain elements of systematic discrimination in a way that citizens who declare themselves as others or not at all, but simply as citizens of this country, are not able to exercise their right to run and be elected to the aforementioned bodies of government.

“It is clear there are political options that neglect conclusions of European institutions on purpose and are setting BiH several steps back on the Euro-Atlantic path,” emphasized Komšić.

He added that some even interpret Sejdic-Finci ruling as a decision which regulates status of minorities in BiH.

“I would rather call them elementary human rights regardless of ethnic affiliation of every citizen of BiH,” emphasized Komšić.

Sejdić congratulated Komšić on his electoral victory.

“I sincerely hope that citizen of BiH will stand beside you in the next presidential mandate in the BiH Presidency regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliation,” emphasized Sejdić.

He said he hopes that Roma children will see school as their home where there is no discrimination and that there will be more workplaces for citizens of BiH in near future, especially for Roma and that everyone will be able to live off their work.

Finci started his address by apologizing to citizens for being forced to listen about Sejdic-Finci for nine years.

“This country has other problems, but this is holding us back on our European path. European Union cannot receive a country which does not follow the EU Convention on Human Rights,” said Finci.
