ZENICA, February 5 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Šefik Džaferović, visited today Topčić Polje near Zenica, which due to heavy rainfall, was hit by the floods and last Sunday, torrential flows took down part of the road.

Local and cantonal authorities, as well as the locals of this settlement, have put all the available resources into operation so that they would prevent the situation from almost five years ago when immense damages occurred caused by floods and landslides, numerous facilities and houses were destroyed in May 2014. The locals remember it too well.

The local road leading to the settlements in Topčić Polje was torn down last weekend due to heavy rain and the water flooded a part of the road in this settlement, but the mechanization put into service by civil protection managed to revitalize the road communication.

Džaferović told reporters today that he saw the good work of the cantonal and local authorities in mitigating the consequences of natural disasters, the most important thing being the need to help the population in parts affected by floods and landslides.

“We will need a significant engagement of authorities in areas where people have suffered damages in order to mitigate the consequences. But in the future, it is necessary to work on the prevention of such events, work on clearing of riverbeds of torrential flows so that we do not have the same problems each year and face the consequences of the disasters,” said Džaferović.

Prime Minister of the Zenica-Doboj Canton Miralem Galijašević said that they are actively working on mitigating the consequences of the floods, but he also stressed that much more work should be done on prevention.

The civil protection service of the Zenica-Doboj Canton registered several smaller landslides in the area but claim that everything is under control, with positive news that the water level of the Bosna River is in decline.
