Nelson: Focus on economic issues and put political disputes in the background

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 12 (FENA) - Ambassador of the United States of America to Bosnia and Herzegovina Eric Nelson expressed hope that the process of establishing the government at all levels would contribute to a stronger focus of the elected BiH officials on numerous economic problems and future reforms, and that political disputes would remain in the background.

During today's meeting with the members of the Collegium of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, the newly-appointed Ambassador added that the United States is ready to help every initiative that leads to reforms.

He noted that the question of activating the Membership Action Plan (MAP) with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a technical issue that will be resolved through an active democratic dialogue.

Nelson believes that the forthcoming annual meeting and economic forum of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) planned for May in Sarajevo should be used to send positive messages from BiH to investors and businesses worldwide and draw attention to BiH market and its potentials.

Chairperson and Deputy Chairs of the House of Representatives, Borjana Krišto, Denis Zvizdić and Nebojša Radmanović, informed Nelson about the current political situation and the process of establishing the government, thanking for the assistance that the United States has continuously provides to BiH.

Chairperson Krišto pointed out that there are still many issues in BiH that need to be discussed and solutions sought that have an impact on the normal functioning of the authorities, especially highlighting the problems with the electoral legislation and the decisions of the Central Election Commission that have done damage to the constituent peoples and to BiH in general.

Pointing out that the most important task of BiH is to preserve peace, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Deputy Chair of the House, Denis Zvizdić, emphasized that the key tasks ahead are those related to the European integration and the activation of the MAP as a step towards NATO membership.

Zvizdić added that in the coming period it is important to work on better regional cooperation and strengthening trust in relations with the neighbors, and as a strong step forward in this direction, he emphasized the final resolving of the border issues with Croatia and Serbia.

As an internal priority, he emphasized economic development and added that key processes are going in the right direction, but that further work should be done to eliminate the barriers in connection to the current state of transport, energy and digital infrastructure.

Also, as a very important task, Zvizdić singled out fight against crime, all forms of extremism and corruption, stated the BiH PA Public Relations Department.
