SARAJEVO, March 28 (FENA) - The Association of antifascists and fighters of the People 's Liberation War in the Municipality Centar Sarajevo today marked the 75th anniversary of the public hanging of the citizens of Sarajevo in Marijin dvor - Aleja Lipa site.

As the president of the association Sretko Hadžiabdić said, anti-fascists today remember 55 citizens of Sarajevo, anti-fascists, who were hanged out in the open in the downtown Sarajevo by German collaborationists at the very end of the World War II.

“Today, we remember 55 citizens of Sarajevo, anti-fascists, whom the Ustasha regime hanged here in the night of March 27-28, 1945, only because they were antifascists, patriots and did not want to betray their homeland and serve the Nazi regime,” said Hadžiabdić in statement for FENA.

He added that it is sad that none of the representatives of the government attended the marking today and that the Association of anti-fascists and fighters of the People's Liberation War is doing all it possibly can to transfer the values of anti-fascism to the younger generations.

“We have gathered students and youth that we hope will carry with them the spirit of antifascism, because one day, we will no longer be here,” Hadžiabdić concluded.

The monument to the killed citizens of Sarajevo by the Ustasha regime was erected in 2008.
