SARAJEVO, April 1(FENA) - Head of the European Union Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative to BiH Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark today in Sarajevo told reporters that this country, including Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH, needs police forces that will meet the needs of citizens.

Answering a journalist’s question on the EU's position on the statements made by RS Minister of Interior Dragan Lukač about a plan to form a reserve police force, Ambassador Wigemark said that he was not fully aware of all the details, because this was a topic that appeared over the weekend.

“However, what will certainly be one of the EU's positions is that this country, whether in RS or the Federation of BiH, needs to have police forces that meet the needs of the citizens. However, there are also issues that are of financial and economic nature," said Wigemark.

Wigemark added that Minister Lukač in his statements stressed the need for enhanced work and action on the issue of migrants, "however, when you speak of such things, then you need to provide some arguments that support it.”

“I know for a fact from a series of talks and meetings that I had with the Police Commissioner of Una-Sana Canton that their resources for dealing with migrants are very limited and are under considerable pressure. However, we are talking about the Una-Sana Canton. I am not aware that the situation is in any way similar in RS. There are some figures of around 1,000 migrants currently on the RS territory. Of course, if there would be a significant increase in the number of migrants, then the needs ought to be reconsidered,” said Ambassador Wigemark.

RS Interior Minister Dragan Lukač said that “it is necessary for the entity Ministry of Internal Affairs to establish a reserve police force to successfully address a range of security challenges that RS could face, such as migrant crisis, natural disasters and other emergency situations in which assistance might be needed to the local population.”
