Mektić informs state-level MPs about the latest situation with migrants

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 20 (FENA) - Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Chairman of the Operational Task Force for Migration in Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Mektić once again warned about the inappropriate behavior of neighboring countries, which are allowing migrants to pass through their territory or they are illegally and unlawfully pushing them back to BiH.

Mektić talked about the issue of migration today with a delegation of parliamentarians from the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, gathered around the European Integration and Security Issues Club that includes Jasmin Emrić, Edita Đapo, Aida Baručija, Mirjana Marinković-Lepić and Dženan Đonlagić.

The aim of the visit was to inform the MPs about the current situation in the field of migration, governance and challenges faced by competent institutions for migration issues and activities planned in the upcoming period.

Minister Mektić highlighted the key problems, primarily that there is no common solution at the EU level, stressing that migrants are passing through EU member states, Greece and Bulgaria.

He noted that the signed readmission agreements, i.e. the possibility of returning illegal migrants to the countries through which they already passed, are not being implemented at all.

He stressed that the strengthening of the protection of the eastern border of BiH was crucial to the management of the migrant situation, and asked parliamentarians to support the filling of the needed number of police officers, the officers in the Border Police and the Service for Foreigners' Affairs.

The situation with migrants most difficultly reflects on the Una-Sana Canton, and the members of the BiH PA delegation conveyed the suggestions and impressions they gained after the recent visit to the temporary reception centers in this canton.

They jointly concluded that the relocation of the centers is necessary from urban areas, and Minister Mektić announced that the relocation of migrants from Bira and Miral to a new location will begin as soon as the conditions on the ground allow it, stated the Ministry of Security of BiH.
