SARAJEVO, May 23 (FENA) - Sarajevo is the best place to talk about the importance of peace, and museum experts have a special duty to talk about this issue, said today President of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Suay Aksoy before the opening of the working part of the conference "European Museum of the Year" (EMYA) that is taking place in Sarajevo.

A number of museum experts from 24 European countries will today during the conference, at different panels, organized by the War Childhood Museum and the European Museum Forum (EMF) discuss numerous topics, such as new museum ideas, new ways of accessing the local context, world history, the environment and literature.

Aksoy pointed out that she visited several Sarajevo’s museums, including the National Museum, which delighted her with the collections, but that she regretted that their numerous needs were not met despite the heroic battle.

She also said that the War Childhood the Museum has a rich collection on a sad and terrifying topic, but that it was established following a simple and emotional approach, leaving a strong impression on the visitors.

“Here in Sarajevo, we notice interweaving of different atmospheres and periods, but always with a touch of something Bosnian,” says Aksoy.

President of the European Museum Forum, Jette Sandahl, said the conference was an ideal opportunity to celebrate achievements of museums, but also to discuss the position of the museum profession in society.

She emphasized that this year they have talked a lot about the ideas of the museums and cultural democracy, sustainability, the environment and the contested histories, as well as the issues that have been neglected to date.

Speaking about museums in BiH, she praised the War Childhood Museum, pointing out that it is the institution that the BiH people must guard against oblivion.

"Museums are an image of a nation, and in BiH, it is necessary to empower these cultural institutions through increased investments," she concluded.

Ambassador of Italy to BiH Nicola Minasi expressed satisfaction to be a part of this important event and stressed that the conference is a great opportunity to talk about culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“This is a good sign for the European path of BiH,” the Ambassador said.

Executive Director of the War Childhood Museum, Amina Krvavac said that the conference program, which runs until May 25, is extremely intense, and expressed hope that this will not be the last time that Sarajevo will have the opportunity to host for more than 200 museum experts.

The conference will contribute, she says, to the development of culture and museum industry in BiH in general.

“I am sure that we will continue in this pace and we plan to start with new, equally ambitious projects,” said Krvavac.

The European Museum of the Year (EMYA) conferences is held since 1977, when the European Museum Forum began to represent the work of European museums and promote their excellence and quality.
