BANJA LUKA, June 10 (FENA) - Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Lars Gunnar Wigemark emphasized today that it is necessary to adopt a new law on the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC) and pointed out that there is room for improvement of the work of this regulatory judicial body.

He recalled the European Commission's opinion on the BiH application for membership, and that one of the fourteen, key recommendations, speaks about the need to draft a new law on HJPC.

"I believe that these latest events with the HJPC have proven the need for a new law. You must have a law that regulates the work of such an institution," Wigemark told reporters in Banja Luka.

He did not want to comment on the letter of the Vice-President of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ružica Jukić, requesting from the members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina “to inform the United Nations and the European Union about the interference in the work of judicial institutions by representatives of the international community in BiH.”

Wigemark said that he did not talk about the work of the judiciary with the BiH Presidency Chairman Milorad Dodik.

He added that he could not comment on individual cases, but also stressed that nobody is above the law, and that an independent, efficient, accountable and professional judiciary is of pivotal importance.

“In order to achieve this, it is necessary that this country undertakes comprehensive reforms, because without the existence of the rule of law, it is difficult to imagine that any country could be a member of the EU,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to BiH.

He also emphasized that the EU does not favor any of the politicians in BiH individually, but that it supports the elected representatives of the government.
