Mostar suffocates and is poised by its own waste, authorities must act urgently

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, June 13 (FENA) - A group of inhabitants of Mostar gathered around the informal group of citizens "Because it concerns me" (Jer me se tiče), which is blocking the access to the city’s landfill site "Uborak" for the fourth day in a row, addressed the City Administration, the Mayor and the competent services on Thursday, urging them to resolve the critical situation with the landfill as soon as possible.

They emphasized that the Uborak landfill is intended for municipal, solid waste, but that, for a long time now, it has been a site where the waste of animal, hospital, medical and other waste of suspicious character has been transported.

They also point out that inhabitants of the northern settlements of Mostar, due to air, water and land pollution, are increasingly suffering from carcinogenic diseases, and it is the same with the residents of the wider urban areas.

For all of the said above, they have requested the immediate stopping of further disposal and carcinogenic sludge at this landfill from the purifiers and to urgently perform adequate measurements and analysis of the state of the environment at the landfill, and to present these results to the public.

They asked for the installation of a water treatment plant and the rehabilitation of the entire landfill area, its closure and relocation as soon as possible.

One of the demands is the resignation of the manager of the landfill, Abdurahman Bećirović because, as they stated, all of the previous failures he has had regarding the disposal of dehydrated waste from the waste water collectors.

Members of the initiative also point out that they expect a response and a statement on these requests by Friday, June 14, by the end of the working day, and they note that none of the officials and responsible persons has responded to them so far.

"Otherwise, peaceful protests will continue and all of you will be responsible for the potential epidemic of contagious diseases because of the buildup of municipal waste on the streets of Mostar, as the sole responsibility for resolving this situation is on you as the competent authorities," stated the Initiative.
