Haviv: Photos from BiH and Panama have made different effects on the world

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 7 (FENA) - War photographer Ron Haviv at a lecture he gave today in Sarajevo on the topic "Biography of a Photo" said that his two photos, although over 25 years old each, had different influences on the world we live in today.

It is one of the most famous photographs of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which Haviv made in 1992 in Bijeljina, which documented an act of ethnic cleansing, and he made another in 1989 in Panama portraying beaten Guillermo Ford.

"The photographs were mostly used fairly and correctly, but there were also cases when they were abused for propaganda purposes a few years ago when Russia invaded Georgia," said Haviv.

He explained that the social networks in Russia used the photo taken in 1992 in Bijeljina with a comment that it depicts the victims, Russian civilians, and this news spread rapidly throughout the country.

"When photographs are used for propaganda, they can have a very powerful but negative effect," said Haviv.

New York University professor Lauren Wals said that a documentary titled "Biography of a Photo" is in the making, and it precisely discusses the two legendary photographs by Ron Haviv from the conflicts in BiH and Panama, which had a huge impact and became an inspiration to people in search of justice.

"These photos began their journey as photo-journalism work, but over the past three decades, they moved into the sphere of economy, and have influenced policies and processes of reconciliation," said Walsh.

The lecture was organized within the framework of the conference "Visual Culture in Postwar Society", which is taking place from 5 to 13 July in Sarajevo, under the patronage of the US Embassy in BiH.
