Al Tayer: Laws and regulations represent the main challenge for green economy

TASHKENT, July 10 (FENA) - Chairman of the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer believes that the main challenges for the development of the green economy are legislation and regulations.

“Everything else is ready. Funding has been provided as well as the technology. The only thing that needs to be done at the level of each country is to legalize it. States must adopt policies, laws and strategies, and we encourage them to do so as soon as possible and enable transformation towards a green economy, "Al Tayer told FENA in Tashkent, at a three-day regional ministerial conference on the green economy which ends today.

As an example of the unpreparedness of many countries for the development of the green economy, Al Tayer singled out the fact that laws do not encourage the private sector to invest in environmentally sustainable projects. It is unrealistic, he says, to expect investments where there is no safe environment for them.

“Transformation towards the green economy will be difficult also because many countries have limited budgets and governments do not always prioritize projects that involve green economy. That is why we need different financial resources, which can be found in private sector that seeks and anticipates the protection of its investments,” says Al Tayer.

He adds that the situation is not the same in all regions and countries, and that it is obvious that some countries do change their laws and regulations more easily and quickly, while others need years to do it.

“We have had several regional conferences and we realized how things move forward. I believe, and I hope it is not too late that we can speed up and reach our goals," said the Chairman of WGEO.

The regional ministerial conference on green economy in Uzbekistan, at which Bosnia and Herzegovina is a participating country, was conceived as a continuation of the World Summit on Green Economy (WGES), which is one of the leading annual global green economy forums.

The UN defines green economy as an economy that results in improved human well-being and social equity, with a significant reduction in environmental risks and further environmental degradation.

The Regional Ministerial Conference on Green Economy for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS countries) in 2019 in the capital of Uzbekistan was organized by the WGEO in close cooperation with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and in partnership with a number of key stakeholders.
