SARAJEVO, July 15 (FENA) - The total greenhouse gas emissions in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the agriculture sector in 2018 amounted to 3.143 gig grams (Gg is a mass unit equal to 1.000.000.000 grams or 1.000 tons) CO2-eq (CO2 emission equivalent), which represents an increase in emissions by one percent in relation to the greenhouse gas emissions in 2017.
The reason for this is the increase in emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrogen oxide (N2O) from agricultural land and the burning of carcasses and remains while there has been a relative decrease in emissions from other sources.
During the observed period, the share of greenhouse gas emissions from various sources in agriculture changed primarily due to the impact of the increase in indirect emissions from agricultural land, the Agency for Statistics of BiH stated.
The IPCC methodology used to estimate greenhouse gas emissions follows the so-called "IPCC Guidelines", which are the procedures for estimating greenhouse gas emissions given by international experts of the Group's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), followed by most of the countries signatories to the Kyoto Protocol for the assessment of national annual emissions of greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse gases (GHG) from the agricultural sector include methane (CH4) and nitric oxide (N2O).
The emission of greenhouse gases is expressed in terms of CO2-equivalent, where the global warming potential of CH4 21 and N2O 310 are relative to the CO2 itself.
