Agreements signed between interior ministries in BiH to tackle illegal migration

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 16 (FENA) - The signing of five agreements on providing assistance and operational cooperation in the process of border monitoring with the aim of more effective prevention of illegal migration took place today at the Main Office of the BiH Border Police in Sarajevo.

The signing of these agreements followed after a long-lasting initiative in order to more effectively respond to the burning problem of illegal migration with the almost exhausted material, technical and human capacities of the BiH Border Police, which, from 2017, has implemented enhanced measures at the BiH border with maximum engagement.

The agreements were signed by the Director of the BiH Border Police Zoran Galić, Deputy Head of the Police of Brčko District Sead Jašarević, the interior ministers from the Canton 10, the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, Darinko Mihaljević, Zdravko Boras and Slađan Bevanda, and the Commissioner of the MoI of the Posavina Canton Marijan Mikić.

The agreements will enable concrete support from the aforementioned ministries and the Brčko District Police in the engagement of police officers who, along with members of the BiH BP, will carry out border monitoring activities in order to prevent illegal crossings of the border in suspected areas.

The agreement with the Una-Sana Canton MoI due to the absence of the Minister will be signed subsequently.

A working meeting was also held in Sarajevo on the topic of modalities of a more efficient response to the problem of illegal migration, attended by representatives of five police bodies and the Director of the RS Police, Darko Ćulum.

Ćulum and Galić last year signed the Agreement on Assistance and Operational Cooperation and ever since, and in accordance with the possibilities of this MoI, the officers have been engaged in border control in the eastern and northeastern part of BiH.

All of the signed agreements envisage the formation and engagement of joint patrols in areas within the jurisdiction of the aforementioned police bodies, which will be administered by the police officers of the BiH Border Police units at the local level, stated the BiH Border Police.
