Goražde - Wigemark reminds of obligation to implement reforms

FENA Press release

GORAŽDE, July 18 (FENA) - The Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Lars-Gunnar Wigemark informed today the Goražde Assembly Chairwoman and Prime Minister of the Podrinje Canton, Edita Velić and Aida Obuća, respectively, on activities related to European integration and the obligations of this Canton from the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA).

With the emphasis that the Government and Assembly of the Podrinje Canton have a significant role to play in supporting the fulfillment of BiH's international obligations, Wigemark reminded participants of the meeting about the country's obligation to implement legal, administrative, institutional and economic reforms as a result of the SAA.

After submitting an application for BiH membership to the EU, the European Commission has published the Opinion and accompanying an Analytical Report stating the reform priorities for accession to the European Union.

As highlighted, the period after the Commission's Opinion is issued will require the domestic authorities to demonstrate effectiveness, cooperation and political and other responsibilities.

Due to the complex political structure of this country, co-ordination and co-operation between different levels of government is key to achieving concrete results.

Therefore, the Government and the Assembly of the Podrinje Canton and Goražde are invited to take advantage of this momentum and actively engage in co-operation across the country in order to develop a comprehensive program for aligning with EU regulations, establishing a clear allocation of tasks and better planning of future steps.

In the coordination and management of the process of EU accession, the role of the Directorate for European Integration (DEI) is a key factor.

However, administrative capacity at all levels for policy planning and coordination of EU-related issues should also be strengthened to ensure an adequate response of BiH authorities to the Opinion of the EU and subsequent requests for accession, it was stated at today's meeting in Goražde.
