SDA: Officials from civilized countries do not visit war criminals in jail

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 25 (FENA) - The Party of Democratic Action (SDA) said today that a visit of the Deputy Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Miljan Brkić to the war crimes suspect Bruno Stojić in the Austrian jail is a monstrous message to the victims of Stojić's crimes, which further undermines the international reputation of Croatia and undermines the relations between Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia.

SDA reminds that the former defense minister of the so-called “Herceg-Bosna” Bruno Stojić was found guilty by The Hague Tribunal for participation in a joint criminal enterprise aimed at dividing BiH and permanently removing the Bosniak population from the occupied territory and saying that Brkic's visit to the war criminal was a message that “we understand all too well.”

The SDA is also of the view that this is the same policy that the Croatian war leadership led by Franjo Tuđman had and for which it was proclaimed responsible for participating in the Joint Criminal Enterprise, and warns that if the highest officials of the Republic of Croatia do not fend off Brkić's proceedings and do not apologize to the victims, this will mean that Brkić represents the dominant voice of Croatian politics.

“Until now, it was unthinkable that a member of an EU country visits a war criminal in jail. The International Court declared him responsible for murder in war camps, kidnappings, torture, sexual assault and other crimes. It is clear that in a civilized country, it is not possible for senior officials to visit war criminals in prison without bearing the responsibility and the consequences," said the SDA in a statement.
