SARAJEVO, August 27 (FENA) – Member in the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Damir Arnaut, today met with the President of the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faruk Zupčević, Secretary General Fedžad Forto and Board member Verica Kalajdžić.
The motif of this meeting was Arnaut's Initiative to incorporate different standards of admissibility, tolerance and evidence in defamation laws regarding alleged defamation against public figures in relation to private persons, in accordance with the practice of the European Court of Human Rights.
Arnaut emphasized that he has never filed a defamation lawsuit, nor did he consider such lawsuits to be appropriate at all in a democratic society.
Representatives of the BiH Association of Journalists supported the Initiative and agreed to establish close cooperation with a view to its realization, with the involvement of a wide range of representatives of public and political life, professional organizations, and the international community, with particular emphasis on cooperation with the OSCE Mission to BiH.
He added that it is necessary for politicians to allow, by their votes, amendments to the law on defamation as proposed in the Initiative.
