Bosnians from the diaspora bring knowledge to their homeland

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 28 (FENA) - The transfer of knowledge from the BiH diaspora to local communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a topic that is often discussed as it brings the opportunities and important potential, but has only recently been put into practice.

An important contribution to this idea comes from the Business Center of the BiH Diaspora, which has networked the associations “Naša perspektiva” and “Restart”. With the support of the USAID Diaspora Invest Project this is slowly becoming a focal point for the transfer of knowledge and information among the business community of the Bosnian diaspora.

“We haven't networked enough yet. Everyone struggled in their business to get back on their feet. Now the companies that work in marketing, animation, film, information technology companies need to connect locally. Then they need to connect with the diaspora, to place their ideas on the market and offer their products abroad,” said Elvir Čaušević, who participated as a lecturer at DiaWorks workshops this week.

DiaWorks workshops were created out of the need to use the desire of successful entrepreneurs from the BiH diaspora to offer their volunteer engagement in transferring knowledge to entrepreneurs in the country.

The lecturers were nominated by the Business Center of the BiH Diaspora, and according to their plan of visits and trips to their homeland, a training timeframe is planned - to which students, entrepreneurs and members of Diasporainvest.ba network can apply.

A member of the BiH diaspora from the UK, who launched her company “TeOra” in BiH, Lilijan Sulejmanović, said that the workshop in which they participated focused on the issue of understanding competitiveness, and discussed the definitions of competitive advantages, competition analysis framework and case studies investigating different examples from practice.

Workshops like this one are not the only chance to connect. Professor Ervin Sejdić shared his knowledge and experience at the last Reconnect conference, which was organized by Restart with the support of the USAID Diaspora Invest Project.

He is originally from Gradačac and currently works at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.

This young expert that originates from BiH left his homeland in 1992 because of the war, and his refugee destiny led him to Canada and the USA, where he eventually received his Ph.D.

The Business Center of the BiH Diaspora remains open for connecting, while more than 600 participants in the events and activities supported by the USAID Diaspora Invest project this summer are proof that there is a significant interest in local communities and with expatriate entrepreneurs.
